The Maharashtra government has decided to provide medical tests for certain diseases free-of-cost to poor patients. The State Health Ministry said in Mumbai that the cost of medical tests for 44 critical diseases, like cancer and thyroid, will be borne by the state government.

AIR correspondent reports that the service of free medical tests for certain critical illnesses is already available in 16 districts of Maharashtra. Now, it will be expanded across the state for the benefit of poor patients. Maharashtra government has tied up with the private diagnostic center to open at least one laboratory in every district to carry out such tests for patients from government run hospitals. These laboratories will cover sub-district hospitals, women’s hospitals, general hospitals, mental hospitals and region specific hospitals.
