United Nations’ annual dinner gala on September 19 alongside US President Donald Trump, Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, and the Queen of Jordan, Rania Al Abdullah, Priyanka Chopra delivered an impassioned speech on girl empowerment at the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards.

Before the speech Priyanka Chopra spoke about female empowerment with Naomi Campbell and Will.I.Am.

On the red carpet, American singer-songwriter Will.I.Am had greeted the desi girl with a warm hug. In the course of the evening, PeeCee felicitated Ria Sharma with the Leadership Award for founding ‘Make Love Not Scars’, an organisation dedicated to acid attack survivors that campaigns to raise awareness in India.

The Annual General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly, another ceremony in the ongoing event, which has world leaders and international celebrities assemble at the UN Headquarters to discuss global issues, also saw Priyanka deliver a nine minute speech highlighting her 11-year association with underprivileged girls in Zimbabwe, India, and most recently, Syria and Jordan. “It was an honour to speak at the event on the importance of empowering girls and addressing global leaders, influencers in the fields of philanthropy, media, business and non-profit organisations,” the actress told Mirror from New York, adding that even though she was supposed to hand out gifts, she ended up receiving some too, including a diamond ring from a Jordanian refugee, who insisted that the actress keep it after shaking a leg to a couple of Bollywood numbers with her.
