Asha Sahani’s 63-year-old body was decomposing in her flat on the 10th floor of Bellscot Tower in Lokhandwala, the residents of the Oshiwara society thought the stench was from a nullah in the vicinity, which connects to the creek.

The nullah emanated foul smell most of the time, so people didn’t suspect something was amiss.

Sahani, 63, lived alone in the flat, as her maid and driver left the job after her husband’s death in 2013.

According to society members, the son, Rituraj, told them that she had also not been in touch with him since last April. She had purportedly told her son that she planned to shift to an old age home, the details of which she didn’t give. And society people said even she did not pay the society charges last year back and we also inform police about this.

Deputy commissioner of police Paramjit Singh Dahiya said, “Rituraj is the son from Asha’s first husband and she stayed with her second husband, who also died in 2013. The flats belonged to him. Rituraj is a Non Residential Indian (NRI) and was staying in the US for a long time.”

Senior inspector SubhashKhanvilkar of Oshiwara police station denied any complaint from the society. “We came to know about her disappearance on Saturday when her son informed us about it,” he said.

“According to the preliminary inquiry, we don’t suspect any foul play. But we have been sending the remains of the body for chemical analysis,” said Khanvilkar.

An official said, “We are checking the son’s credentials to find out if he came to Mumbai on Sunday afternoon. We will inquire at the airport to find out about his arrival.”
