Bill Lawry, the legendary Australian captain, and commentators have urged players to reconsider boycotting Australia A’s imminent tour of South Africa as the pay dispute engulfing Australian cricket show no signs of abating.

A boycott over the South African tour looks inevitable unless a breakthrough is struck between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) by Friday (July 7) – the date when Australia A’s squad are scheduled to fly out to South Africa.

Lawry, who is a life member of the ACA, believed boycotting was the wrong approach. “Personally, if I was one of the young players on the Australia A tour I’d be very, very unhappy if it doesn’t happen because this is their opportunity to put their hand up and say ‘I’m the next cab off the rank’,” Lawry told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday (July 4). “It’s something the ACA and the senior players who are saying, ‘we’re behind you’, should be really thinking about.
