In a strategy to revamp the state Congress party, Ashok Chavan, the president of Maharashtra State Congress Committee has dissolved 12 non- performing committees. A party source claimed that Chavan will appoint fresh and young leaders to boost the morale of party workers.

According to a party insider, Chavan was reviewing each committee since last week.“He met the president of various committees and demanded a report card. It was brought to his notice that several committee chiefs had not appointed any deputy or officers under them and had not even held any specific program for outreach,” said the party insider.

The important committees which will be not be functioning till the new ones are formed, include the committee for social justice, higher and technical education, employment and self-employment cell, Kutchi-Gujarati cell.

The party has conducted elections to choose a leader at various stages. In such a situation, Chavan wants to appoint fresh leaders keeping in mind the next poll for both parliament and assembly that is scheduled for 2019. In August, once the national president is elected or nominated, some straightforward decisions are expected to be taken,” said a party insider.

Chavan on Tuesday claimed that the BJP government’s decision to waive off farm loans was taken with an eye on mid-term polls. “The manner in which the decision was taken signals that the BJP is preparing for mid-term polls,” said the former Maharashtra CM.
