Mumbai: Government Railway Police at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) arrested a person on Tuesday evening for forcefully kissing a woman assistant director of Maharashtra Finance and Accounts Services, a state government entity. The 27-year-old woman, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was on her way home when the accused arrived in the waiting hall area and held her hand before kissing her.

The incident took place at around 5:40pm after which the accused, Shankar Nair (26), was apprehended by commuters and beaten up. After Nair was handed over to the CSMT Government Railway Police (GRP), he said he was a pavement dweller at the CSMT station. Nair hails from Gulbarga district in Karnataka.

GRP officials said Nair walked up to the woman and held her hand to kiss her. “The incident has not been captured in the CCTV camera installed at the station. Commuters caught hold of him after the woman raised an alarm,” a GR official said. Nair is a daily wage earner and has lived on the footpath for the past four years. Officials said there was no trigger point for him to target the woman and did the act intentionally. “We are yet to gather more details of his antecedents.  We also found that he has no past criminal case against him,” a GRP officer at CSMT said. The GRP has registered a case under IPC sections of 354 (molestation) and 509 (outraging modesty of women) against Nair. The accused was produced before a railway court which has remanded him in police custody till August 16.
