Supreme Court puts lawyer’s name on hold for judge

The Allahabad High Court has been sanctioned a strength of 160 judges on June 1, 2017.Presently HC is functioning with 84 judges, and their are76 posts are vacant. The Taking a strong note of a criminal case against an advocate whose name was cleared for appointment as a judge of the Allahabad High Court, the Supreme Court collegium is learnt to have asked the Centre to put his appointment on hold.

According to sources in the Union Law Ministry, Chief Justice of India JS Khehar wrote a letter to the Centre a few days back, recommending the name of advocate Amit Negi, who was recommended for elevation to the Bench last year, to be put on hold till the final outcome of the criminal case against him.At the same time, Chief Justice Khehar’sasked in his letter that the government to process the remaining 19 names that had been recommended by the Allahabad HC collegium along with Adv.Negi which had also been cleared by the SC collegium.
