Thane districtBhayandar: The Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit police ascertained the identity of a murder victim and arrested the killers after piecing the tattered remains of a visiting card found in the dead man’s pocket.

The police had recovered the body of a middle aged man dumped in a drain near Shivar Garden on 30, July. Found in a highly decomposed condition, the face was smashed beyond recognition. SP Dr. Mahesh Patil handed over the case to the LCB team which found a tattered visiting card from the victim’s pocket.

The card turned out to be that of a local civil contractor which helped cops establish the identity of the deceased as Yunus Yusuf Shaikh, a 40-year-old electrician who was missing since July 14 from his tenement underneath the flyover bridge in Bhayandar. Later Shaikh’s sister also confirmed the identity of the body from the clothes.

Investigations revealed that Shaikh used to work at local construction sites with his colleague SikanderUdmiya Shaikh (38), a plumber from  Kashimira. The police team led by PI VyenkatAndhale and  API PramodBadakh detained Sikander who after rounds of sustained interrogation confessed to the crime which according to him was the fallout of a monetary dispute.

Sikander also revealed the involvement of his accomplice identified as Mahamad Yusuf Mulla (35) alias Subhan who was also arrested from his house in the Govind Nagar area of Mira Road. In their confession to the police, the duo stated that during a late night binge session on July 15, an altercation over unfair distribution of money triggered a fight following which they stoned Shaikh to death and dumped his body into the drain.

A case under see section 302 (murder) and 201 ( causing disappearance of evidence of offense) of the IPC has been registered against the duo who have been remanded to police custody till August 9 after they were produced before the Sessions Court Thane.
