With the Mumbai university’s delay in declaring results, the directorate of higher education (DHE) has extended the deadline to register for the three-year law course to July 15.

Even as the decision comes as arelief to law aspirants in the city, it will cause a delay in law admissions. Candidates from universities other than MU will bear the brunt of this delay.

So far, of the 27,000 law aspirants who took the common entrance test for the course, 15,000 have registered for the centralised admission process (CAP). In the absence of final year results, aspirants from MU-affiliated colleges are unable to complete their application, as they are required to enter their marks in the application form.

So far, the university has hardly assessed 20% of around 20 lakh answer sheets from the semester examination.

While the vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh on Saturday said that he aimed to declare the results in 10 to 15 days, it appears to be an uphill task.

On Tuesday, GovernorChVidyasagar Rao, who also serves as chancellor of the University, asked the varsity administration to declare all results by July 31.

An official from DHE said they have asked all universities in the state to convey the tentative date of result declaration.

The admission process stretched to almost half a year owing to litigations, persistent delays, and enormous confusion. Students approached the governor to complain. “This lack of professional approach of the MU has been persistent and occurring perpetually. This inefficiency has impaired the lives of innumerable students and MU refuses to improve it’s unsatisfactory and abysmal performance,” reads a letter by Student Law Council, a student group.
