Ranjit Kumar, who holds the second highest ranking in law division of the government as Solicitor-General of India has resigned within months after the Centre gave him an extension, with immediate effect after Diwali on Friday.

After the resignation given by Kumar rumors have been floated for considering him direct elevation as Supreme Court Judge but Mr. Kumar’s office confirmed the submission of the resignation letter.

Kumar, a successful senior advocate, joined the government’s team of law officers in the Supreme Court in 2014.

His resignation counted for personal and family commitments. His tenure of three years as Solicitor General had ended on June 6, 2017, but the government had extended the tenure on an ad hoc basis.

Decision on the resignation letter of Kumar acceptance will be taken when Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad returns.

Considering the source and language of the letter reviled that Kumar had already made up his mind to quit the government but his decision follows to shortly for government after Mukul Rohatgi quit as an Attorney-General of India in June 2017 and returned to private practice.

Lawyers condemns the rumors and said there was no need for a law officer to resign if his name is being considered for judgeship.
