Tomato prices have increased in Nashik due to a heavy shortfall in production, affecting the metro markets. The reason for the price rise is mainly due to low production and high demand. In December last year, there was a glut and tomato was sold at Rupee one per kg with most farmers finding it easier to use the vegetable as manure. Due to this scare, less number of farmers took the risk of planting tomato causing a heavy shortage in July this year.
In July last year the PimpalgaonBaswant Agriculture Produce Market Committee, (APMC), received around 15,000 crates daily. Each crate has approximate 20 kg tomatoes. On Monday, the Pimpalgaon market traded 25 crates out of 19 crates of good quality tomato which were sold at a single rate of Rs 1151 per crate and six crates of small size tomato at Rs 600 per crate. This is the biggest market for tomatoes in Maharashtra and during peak season after August 15, the daily arrival is 400,000 crates.
