Mumbai: On Tuesday The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested two persons for fraudulently withdrawing Rs 20,000 from a senior citizen’s account through an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) machine at Grant Road.

The history-sheeters Rafique Shaikh (25) and Salim Shaikh (23) have been arrested. The incident took place on May 18. The complainant had withdrawn Rs 5,000 from the ATM machine near Novelty cinema at Grant road. The matter came to light when the complainant received a message on her mobile phone that Rs 20,000 has been debited. After inquiring with her husband, she realized that it was the handiwork of con men and gave instructions to her bank to block her ATM card.

While the complainant was withdrawing cash from the ATM and she had swiped her ATM card at one of the machines, the accused informed her that the machine was not working and it had no cash in it. The woman had already swiped her ATM card and had entered the details and the ATM pin and had not exited the procedure. While the woman switched to another machine, the fraudsters withdrew cash of Rs 20,000 from her HDFC bank account. Based on the CCTV footage, the accused were arrested. Rafique and Salim were arrested from Queens Park at Mira Road. According to the police inspector, Santosh Kadam, crime branch unit 2, “The accused have confessed.”
