“A huge tree fell near a college at Belapur’s sector 8 on Wednesday morning. Within a few minutes, another tree fell near Jain Temple at Vashi, Sector 9,” said an official from the NMMC’s disaster management cell.The tree authority of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) undertook a massive drive to identify and trim trees that could cause accidents during monsoon.

According to the official, 10 trees on an average fall in the city every day. He added “Between 8.30am on Tuesday and 8.30am on Wednesday, the city received 61.7mm rains, which is good. Airoli received the maximum rain of 75 mm over the past 24 hours. It was followed by Belapur with 62 mm spots of rain”.

Certain areas of the city have seen temporary waterlogging because of the rains. Some subways have also been water-logged. However, no major accidents have been reported from any part of the city so far.“Trees are falling frequently in the residential areas of the city. To prevent untoward incidents, the NMMC should conduct a new survey of such trees take the requisite measures very soon,” said Manisha Shirke, 37, a resident of Belapur.
