On Wednesday, police arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly molesting a differently-abled teenager in his vehicle in Andheri.
The Incident:
According to a report in Indian Express, the incident took place on July 13, in the auto rickshaw which she and her mother were travelling in. The 15-year-old girl, who is unable to walk or speak, accidentally hurt herself at home, after which her mother rushed her to the hospital in Four Bungalows.her mother hired an auto rickshaw and told the driver to take them to the hospital.
Inspector G GPatil of Versova police station told Indian Express, “It was 10.30 pm by the time they reached the hospital, so the mother left her daughter in the autorickshaw and went inside to check if there was a doctor on call.”
The police added that when the mother had gone to check on the doctor, the auto rickshaw driver molested the girl. When the mother returned, she saw the girl crying but assumed that it was because she had hurt herself at home. After returning home, the next day they left home for going to the hospital again, but the girl got agitated when she spotted the same auto rickshaw driver passing by her building, but was unable to communicate the reason of her agitation.
After returning from the hospital, the girl wrote a note in English, describing what the auto rickshaw driver he did to her.
Personal Tragedy:
Soon after the incident, the family was hit by a personal tragedy. The mother’s mother and mother-in-law passed away in a quick succession. Due to which they were unable to approach the police.
The arrest:
But, on Monday, the woman and daughter went to DN Nagar police station to file the complaint. G GPatil of Versova police station told Indian Express, “A meeting of the local women’s committee was going on there and a social worker asked them what their trouble was. She then brought them to Versova police station to file the complaint.”
After registering the complaint, the police started the investigation and checked the CCTV footage from the girl’s building, to find out the auto rickshaw’s licence number. After getting the licence, number the police tracked the auto rickshaw driver and detained him from his home.
The girl identified the driver and the police have booked the auto rickshaw driver for molestation under the Indian Penal Code and sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
